Etching and Passivation of Acid-Resistant Stainless Steel
In unfavorable conditions (on welds, seams, and joints), acid-resistant stainless steel can lose its rust-resistant properties. In these specific areas, the steel, usually rich in chromium, is locally deprived of this noble element due to processing. To avoid crevice or pitting corrosion on joints of elements made of stainless steel, passivation should be performed.
Pickling and passivation aim to clean the steel surface and restore the passive layer, rich in oxygen and chromium, which provides high resistance to corrosive agents.
